- I'm not quite sure what you mean by "justify SASG and its users" in this
- context (am I supposed to justify my existence as a SASG supporter?), but
- I know that the SASG charter makes a lot of sense. At least to me. To be
- a developer/member of the SASG group, you have to commit to support, which
- ultimately helps the end users (that is, you and me). If you registered a
- year ago, you have had a years worth of use of a very nice piece of work,
- including some free fix releases. The SASG charter also says that (as a
- developer) you should charge for _major upgrades_. With a fee less than the
- original registry fee. Why do you expect people to spend _considerable_
- time and effort maintaining and expanding a product, for free? Why should
- devoted Amiga shareware developers work for nothing? (there's a clue in
- the term "shareware"--the basic idea is that if you use the product, you
- pay your share. See also "freeware," which is for free ;)
-
- MUI 3 _is_ a major upgrade. You don't _have to_ upgrade, ever, unless you
- wish to use the new features. You also don't _have to_ pay up for a 3.2
- registration, unless you wish to make permanent some of the new nifty
- settings. I _gladly_ paid the fee for MUI 2, and I have not yet decided
- when I'll pay the upgrade fee for MUI 3, and I still get to use all the
- new features.
-
- Somehow, this is related to the weird mindset that seems to persist in a
- large part of the Amiga community--that all software should support all
- past releases of the OS. This is an unreasonable desire, which (if ad-
- hered to) blocks progress, and tend to make programs that attempts to
- "please all" more bloated then needed. The fact that I've had my A2000
- since the day it was first announced is in itself remarkable, it has truly
- grown with my needs over the years, and has proved itself to be a very
- expandable system indeed. If you know someone that bought a 286/386 based
- IBM PC/clone at the same time the A2000 came out, ask them if they still
- use the same hardware and software on it. Chances are they don't. And
- that they didn't get their upgrades for free, I can [almost] guarantee...
-
- I guess I'm dense, cuz' I simply don't get it: A really devoted group of
- very productive and very professional Amiga programmers get together and
- form a "standards group" of sorts, leading to only Good Things for the all
- but abandoned remainder of the Amiga community, and some people think it's
- a load of crap? Like I said, I don't get it. Being a software developer
- myself, I strongly support the idea that programmers should get paid for
- their work. Get a different perspective. Get rid the "I want it for free"
- attitude, it is unrealistic and unfair at best (does the term "spoiled
- brat" ring a bell?).
-
- After all, the bottom line is: If you don't want to pay, fine. Don't.
- But don't come screaming about unfair practices. And if you don't demand
- a free upgrade to the latest model of the car you bought last year, how
- the heck can you make precisely this same demand on software "models"?
-
- With thanks to Stefan and the rest of the SASG bunch: keep up the good
- work--"illegitimus non carborundum" (don't let the whiners grind you down).
